Blocked ships in Ukrainian ports during the war: The Berdiansk port

The Monitoring Group of the Black Sea Institute of Strategic Studies and BlackSeaNews wishes to bring to your attention a new series of articles about the fate of ships that were in Ukrainian ports on 24 February 2022, when Russia launched a full-scale invasion of many regions of Ukraine.
As of 24 February 2022, in the seaport of Berdiansk (the Sea of Azov, Zaporizhzhia region, Ukraine), in addition to port fleet vessels permanently based in Berdiansk, there were 5 merchant ships taking on Ukrainian export cargo (See items 1-5, highlighted in yellow, in Table 1), as well as the technological fleet - 4 dredgers and a tug, which were deepening navigating channels on the approaches to the port (See items 6-10, highlighted in blue, in Table 1).
On 15 March 2022, by order of Russian occupiers, all these vessels left the port of Berdiansk. This was necessary to make room at the berths for Russian Black Sea Fleet ships, as Russia decided to use the port of Berdiansk as a logistics centre to supply the Russian force grouping on the Ukrainian coast of the Sea of Azov.
On 16 March 2022, all these vessels arrived at the northern entrance to the Kerch Strait in the Sea of Azov. On 24 March 2022, most of these vessels - except ADMIRAL (IMO 8408648) and MAORI (IMO 9874208) - left the Kerch Strait for the Black Sea:
- on 26 March 2022, the Ukrainian technological fleet vessels arrived in the Turkish port of Sinop;
- on 26 March 2022, the dry cargo ships GHADA A, IMO 7126102, and PRINCESS RAWYA, IMO 9119907, arrived at the entrance to the Bosphorus;
- on 25 March 2022, the dry cargo ship FIRAT, IMO 8310384, arrived in the Turkish port of SAMSUN.
The dry cargo ships ADMIRAL, IMO 8408648, and MAORI, IMO 9874208, have been in the Sea of Azov, near the Kerch Strait, since 16 March 2022, as they cannot obtain the permission to pass to the Black Sea.
