Moldova's Gagauz autonomy reports over 50 per cent turnover in run-off legislative election

The turnover in the run-off legislative election in Moldova's southern Gagauz autonomy on 23 September was 51 per cent, with the election being validated.

The chairwoman of the Gagauz Central Electoral Commission, Svetlana Mironova, has told MOLDPRES that elections were validated in all 35 election constituencies.

Mironova said that 21 deputies were elected in the run-off, after the first 13 were elected in the first round held two weeks ago. All in all, 25 independent candidates, seven representatives of the opposition Party of Communists, two of the senior coalition Liberal Democratic Party and one representative of the Party of Socialists made it to the Popular Assembly of the autonomous territorial-administrative entity of Gagauzia.

Mironova added that no serious violations had been registered during the ballot.

As many as 163 candidates run for the Gagauz Popular Assembly. The region's deputies are elected for a four-year term.
