Turkey demands bigger gas discount from Iran
Turkish Minister for Energy and Natural Resources Taner Yildiz believes that the International Arbitrary Court considering the Ankara vs. Tehran gas case will reduce Iran’s prices for the fuel, The Lira reports.
Yildiz confirmed that Iran proposed a low discount.
The gas dispute started in January 2012. Yildiz said that Iran had refused to reduce the price.
Turkey signed a deal to purchase 10 billion cubic meters of Iranian gas annually (30 million cubic meters daily) in 1996. Iran increased gas exports to Turkey by 12% in 2011, compared with 2010, to 24 million cubic meters daily. Botas says that 39.7 billion cubic meters of gas were imported from Iran in 2011. Russia is the primary gas exporter for Turkey, followed by Iran and Azerbaijan.
