Bike traffic is banned in Bucharest
Going by bike around the city has been banned in Romania’s capital. By decision of law enforcement agencies the majority of bike paths have been eliminated and those who ride a bike on the sidewalk or on roadway face a fine of 420 Romanian lei.
Previously, the city administration has transferred control of bike lanes in Bucharest to a specialized body of the local public administration. Immediately thereafter, police produced safety requirements for the lanes, most of which, in its opinion, were not fulfilled.
Police closed about 100 kilometres of Bucharest bicycle lanes. As expected, this problem will not be solved before the end of the year.
Last week a large-scale protest cycle ride took place in Romanian capital, but the authorities chose to ignore it.
