Turkey' s anti-PKK ground operation into Northern Iraq
Turkish troops conducted a ground operation on November 7 against outlawed Kurdistan Workers' Party (PKK) camps in northern Iraq.
A group of Maroon Berets, specially trained soldiers within the Turkish Armed Forces (TSK), advanced about five kilometers into Iraqi territory to inspect the area and hunt down militants.
The soldiers returned to Turkey via aircraft after the operation. Information on casualties from the operation was not immediately available.
The Turkish Parliament approved a government motion last month seeking a one-year extension of the mandate to conduct military operations against the PKK in northern Iraq.
The PKK has used northern Iraq as a springboard for attacks on Turkish targets in its decades-long fight for autonomy in Turkey's predominantly Kurdish Southeast. The conflict has killed tens of thousands of people since the PKK took up arms in 1984.
