Law on high treason comes into effect in Russia

The law, which hardens the penalty for divulging government secrets and introduces broader definitions of treason and espionage takes effect on November 14 in Russia.

According to the law, a new article has been introduced into Russia’s Criminal Code: unlawful acquisition of information, which comprises government secrets.

It provides for liability even in cases where the receipt of classified information is not espionage or high treason.
