Chisinau to reduce atmospheric emissions and to increase energy efficiency by year 2020

By year 2020, Chisinau will reduce the atmospheric discharges and will increase 20% the energy efficiency in the use of renewable energy sources, within the frameworks of a project financed by the European Union.

These measures are envisaged in an Action Plan in the field of Sustainable Energy, worked out by the Chisinau City Hall, in partnership with the Institute for Development and Social Initiatives (IDIS) Viitorul.

The Head of the EU Delegation to Moldova, Ambassador Dirk Schuebel said on Januaty 29 at the presentation of the project «Increasing energy efficiency of Chisinau and Sevastopol municipalities based on existing positive experience» that this is one of the two projects carried out by the European Union, jointly with the municipal authorities.

«The first project has been successfully completed. The second one is a unique project. It has concrete results and plans for the future, by year 2020. It aims at reducing 20% the CO2 emissions and an increasing 20% the energy efficiency. The cooperation with Sevastopol City Hall, as well as with the Georgian authorities, has been fruitful,» he said.

According to Dirk Schuebel, Moldova is one of the most energy demanding countries in the region. He said that the local authorities should pay efforts in this respect in order to decrease the energy consumption indexes. 

A representative of the Cooperation in Urban Development and Dialogue Program (CIUDAD), Jan Edwin Waanders said that the project of the Action Plan in this respect is directly financed by the European Union. 

The cost of the project «Increasing energy efficiency of Chisinau and Sevastopol municipalities based on existing positive experience» is 700 thousand euros, of which 65% will be spent in Chisinau. The project will last for 28 months.
