Northwest Bulgaria is poorest region in EU
The Bulgarian Northwest region continues to be the poorest region in the European Union, shows the Eurostat ranking.
The gross domestic product in Northwest Bulgaria is only 26% of the average in the EU. Five out of all six Bulgarian regions are among the poorest European regions. The GDP per capita in the Central North region is 29%, the one in the Central South region- 30%, in the Northeastern and Southeastern regions it amounts to 36% of the average in the EU. The only exception is the Southwestern Bulgarian region where the GDP amounts to 75% of the average in the Union.
