MEPs coming to Moldova to help overcome crisis
A joint mission of MEPs representing the two largest groups in the European Parliament arrived in Chisinau on May 26 for talks with Moldova's leaders on how to overcome the present political crisis.
The visit of Jacek Protasiewicz (EPP, Vice-President of the European Parliament) and Libor Roucek (S&D, Vice-President of the Group) comes ahead of the vote by the Moldovan Parliament on the new Government proposed by Prime Minister-designate Iurie Leanca.
On May 27, the guests will meet Prime Minister-designate Leanca and other representatives of the former Alliance for European Integration coalition.
«Moldova urgently needs a stable and pro-European government to consolidate democratic institutions and pursue reforms that will benefit Moldova's citizens. It needs a credible government to safeguard the achievements of the past years. And it needs a government with a clear mandate to complete negotiations on the Association Agreement, the DCFTA and to implement the visa liberalization regime,» the MEPs said in a joint statement.
In their opinion, «Failure to reach a political compromise may have serious repercussions for Moldova's European integration process.»
«The objective of our visit is not to impose an agreement. But we shall do our best to facilitate a constructive and forward-looking dialogue between our respective sister parties in Moldova,» said the joint statement.
According to its authors, «In the European Parliament, our groups have different views on many issues, but we share the desire to see Moldova move forward on its path toward the European Union. Our Moldovan partners share the same goal. Now they must demonstrate their ability to transcend partisan differences to achieve it.»
