Moldova likely to sign association agreement with EU by late 2014

Parliament Speaker Igor Corman have said, when returned from his visit to Brussels (Belgium), that it was realistic Moldova signs an association agreement with the European Union by the end of 2014. Thus, Moldova will be withdrawn from the list of countries whose citizens are obliged to get visas for travelling to the European Union.

„It is realistic that, until the next ordinary parliamentary elections, we are to sign the association agreement with the EU, which includes the free trade area. It is realistic that, by late 2014, Moldova is to be withdrawn from the list of countries, which need visas for travelling to the European area, but this thing can happen with two conditions,” – Corman said at a briefing held today.

Corman also said that the first condition referred to Moldova’s interior agenda. „Here, I refer to everything that we have to do in order to avoid having things left behind. This does not suppose only the importance of adopting and implementing laws of the action plan on visa free regime and on the trade area, but there are also important issues related to the consolidation of the democratic institutions, of the autonomy of institutions, which would ensure the observance of the law and the fight against corruption, it is about the justice reform,” – Corman said.

The second condition refers to „the situation in the EU, to the EU’s decision-making mechanisms, to the procedures, including the technical ones, which have to be completed”.

Corman added that it was realistic for Moldova to achieve the initialling of the association agreement with the EU at the Eastern Partnership Summit, due in Vilnius this autumn.

Corman paid a working visit to Brussels on 17 – 19 June 2013.
