Ambassador of the Netherlands keen on Maramures tourism, preservation of local rural heritage / Photos

Ambassador of the Netherlands in Bucharest Matthijs van Bonzel, and Honorary Consul of the Kingdom of the Netherlands in Cluj-Napoca, Walterus Reijers discussed with president of the Maramures County Council Zamfir Ciceu the timeliness of particular investments and safeguarding tourism heritage.

The Dutch diplomats were impressed by Maramures (northwestern Romania), saying that they visited several traditional villages, the Sapanta Merry Cemetery, but also the Museum of the Victims of Communism in Sighetu Marmatiei. 

"We enjoy the scenery in this area, the traditional architecture, the locals' hospitality and the extraordinary tourist potential of this county. The main reason for concern is that in many Maramures villages constructions emerge which are not consistent with traditional architecture, and therefore there is the risk that tradition goes lost. In countries like Greece, Austria or Switzerland the traditional village and its architecture have been well preserved through legislative measures and the rigorous observance thereof. I was also impressed by the Museum of the Victims of Communism that can be a model for us all, because in the Netherlands we too have a prison we plan to convert into a museum", – said the Dutch Ambassador.  

The president of the Maramures County Council presented the Dutch diplomats the tourist project "The Circuit of the Northern Transylvania Wooden Churches" under which 16 wooden churches in the county will be restored with European money, with the contribution of the Maramures County Council.
