Foreigners will be free to buy Bulgarian land from 2014
Foreign citizens will have the opportunity to buy land in Bulgaria from January 1, 2014, the Bulgarian National Radio reminded. The start of the next year will mark the lifting of the protective grace period, established upon Bulgaria's entry in the EU.
There was an opportunity to extend the moratorium until 2016, but the idea was rejected.
Now it is also possible for foreigners to acquire land in Bulgaria, however, only through a registered Bulgarian company and on behalf of a legal person.
There are conflicting views about the acquisition of Bulgarian land by individuals from other countries. On the one hand, it would activate the investments in small villages and revive poor regions. On the other hand, however, the moratorium is a kind of protection of national interests.
