Five athletes to represent Moldova at Sochi Olympic Games

A delegation of over 20 persons will represent the Republic of Moldova at the 2014 Winter Olympics due in Sochi, Russian Federation.

As many as five athletes from Moldova, Italy, Austria and Romania will perform at the 2014 Winter Olympic Games under the Moldovan flag, the Deputy Chair of the National Olympic Committee, Nicolae Peatac told.

Thus, Victor Pinzaru and Alexandra Camensic will compete at skiing, Romanian citizen Bogdan Macovei – at sliding, whereas Italian citizen Mirco Deflorian and Austrian Georg Linder – at alpine skiing.

“It is quite possible that Alexandra Camensic will also perform at biathlon competitions, as she had managed to obtain the scores needed for participation. The athletes trained in the period September 9 – December 23 in Austria, Norway, Switzerland and Italy, and concurrently participated in different competitions in these countries,” he said.

In his words, the Moldovan Government earmarked 611 thousand lei for training the athletes and 1.2 million lei for equipments and other expenditures.

At the 2014 Winter Olympics, the athletes representing Moldova will also be accompanied by three coaches and three group heads for each sports. Moreover, among other members of the Moldovan delegation is the Chairperson of the National Olympic Committee Nicolae Juravschi, Secretary General of the National Olympic Committee Cristina Vaselianova, as well as five sports journalists, including the director of the Sports-Currier newspaper Veaceslav Romanescu, the Deputy President of the Moldovan Sports Press Association, Eduard Ciobanu and the photo-journalist, Boris Harcenco.

“Among the Moldovan politicians that will be present at the Winter Olympics in Sochi are Prime Minister Iurie Leanca, Moldovan Minister of Youth and Sports Octavian Bodisteanu, as well as his Deputy – Dragos Hincu. Unfortunately, Moldovan President Nicolae Timofti will not attend the 2014 Sochi Winter Olympics, following the example of his US, German and French counterparts,” he said.

Infotag’s dossier: Moldova competed in the Winter Olympic Games as an independent nation for the first time at the 1994 Winter Olympics in Lillehammer, Norway. Since then, the Republic of Moldova has regularly participated in the Winter Olympic Games. Yet, so far, it has not managed to get any Olympic medals.

The 22nd Winter Olympics are scheduled to take place from February 7 – 23, 2014, with some events to be held in the nearby resort town of Krasnaya Polyana. Ninety-eight events in fifteen winter sports will be held. Sochi was selected as the host city on July 4, 2007, during the 119th IOC Session held in Guatemala City, defeating bids from Salzburg, Austria, and Pyeongchang, South Korea. The Sochi Olympics will be the first Olympics in the Russian Federation since the breakup of the USSR.
