In January 2025, for strikes on Ukraine from the occupied Crimea, the Russian Armed Forces (RAF) used no less than:

  • 4 Kalibr SLCM from the BSF ships and submarines

  • 8 Iskander-type BM

  • 573 Shahed-136/131 strike UAVs launched simultaneously from Crimea and Russian regions

  • 68 reconnaissance UAVs of the ZALA, Supercam, Merlin-ВР, Orlan-10 and other types

  • There has been no P-800 Oniks AShM, 3М22 Zircon or Shahed-136/131 strike UAV launches exclusively from TOT Crimea (without simultaneous launches from the RF) in January.

Overall, there has been no less than 20 attacks in January 2025.

January trends and developments.
In January, the launches of Shahed-136/131 strike UAVs from Crimea and simultaneously from the regions of the Russian Federation resumed after a pause over December 2024. However, only 6 launches took place from the Crimea+RF sites — one on the first day of the year, and then, after a twenty-day pause, 5 more starting on January 22.
Instead, in January, there was not a single Shahed-136/131 launch exclusively from Crimea without a simultaneous double from a Russian site.
While the frequency of simultaneous drone strikes on mainland Ukraine launched jointly from Crimea and RF territory has decreased, the number of UAV attack launchpads within RF territory is increasing, particularly in regions bordering Ukraine.
Launches of Iskander cruise and ballistic missiles increased slightly — up to 8 — mainly late in the month, while there were 5 missiles launched in December and November 2024 each. That number is significantly lower than in the summer and early fall of 2024, when 20-25 Iskanders were launched each month.
No launches of Oniks and Zircon missiles have been recorded.
Russia's use of reconnaissance UAVs in the southern regions also remained high: the Defense Forces downed 68 drones, which is three times more than in December of last year.
