Romania to help Moldovan farmers mitigate drought consequences

The Romanian government will help Moldovan farmers mitigate the consequences of the current year drought by earmarking Moldova 110 tons of wheat for the autumn sowing and 50 thousand euros to meet other needs.

The announcement was made by Romanian Agriculture and Rural Development Minister Daniel Constantin. He held a phone conversation with Moldovan Agriculture and Food Minister Vasile Bumacov on 27 September.

The decision of the Romanian government was reiterated at the meeting Vasile Bumacov held with the minister counsellor at Romania's Embassy in Moldova, Gabriel Pistol.

The Moldovan government on 26 September approved a draft decision on earmarking 162 million lei to mitigate the consequences of the current year drought and to back Moldovan farmers in the autumn wheat and maize sowing , to not compromise the 2013 harvest and to preserve the livestock.

The drought damages inflicted to the agricultural sector amount to 3 billion lei (about 190 million euros), out of which 2, 5 billion lei are losses in the cereals production sector and 0, 5 billion in the horticulture and animal-breeding sectors.
