New type of ID cards to be issued in Moldova starting from March 2013

The Ministry of Informational Technologies and Communications will start issuing new-type of identity cards on March 7, 2013 and not in the beginning of the 2013 year. This decision was adopted at the Government’s ordinary meeting held on Wednesday, December 26, 2012.

Pavel Filip, Minister of Informational Technologies and Communications said that the design of the documents will also be changed and that the new-type ID cards will have the size of a bank card, in the format ID-1(54.0 х 85.6 mm).

The new ID cards will encompass standard data on the holder: name, surname, birth date, photography and address. The military service record card, as well as civil status documents will no longer be required for the issuance of the ID cards.

According to the minister, some other Moldovan documents will be changed, such as the certificate of identification, including the temporary one, the permanent resident cards and the temporary residence permits for foreign citizens, identity cards for refugees and for beneficiaries of humanitarian assistance.

Filip also said that these amendments had been recommended by the development partners of the Republic of Moldova. The minister said that the approved amendments will require certain expenses from the state budget.

Previously, Minister said that these changes will allow to decrease the level of corruption in the system of document issuance and will diminish the red-tape phenomenon in Moldova.

The old-type ID cards will be valid until their date of expiry.

Prime Minister Vlad Filat said that the most important thing is that the new-type documents will ensure a higher level of safety of the personal data of its holders.
