Romanian nuclear waste brought to Russia

Romania continues deactivation of the nuclear reactor for generation and research on the isotopes at the National Nuclear Physics and Engineering Institute in the city of Măgurele near Bucharest.

The used nuclear fuel has been completely brought out of Romania into Russia. Representatives of the Institute have noted that this is the first case in the Romanian history, when nuclear waste is taken out of the country’s territory.

The nuclear reactor of the Institute in the city of Măgurele was built in 1955-1957 and had continuously worked till 1997. The reactor was used for scientific researches with the use of neutrons, as well as for generation of radioisotopes, intended for the industries, agriculture, and medicine.

Reactor’s deactivation was commenced in 2010 and will be completed by 2020.
