Moldovan president made statement on political situation

On February 16, 2013 President Nicolae Timofti held a briefing on the political situation in the country, the presidential press service has reported.

The president’s statement says:

I would like to express my ideas via a statement on the political situation in the country. The recent political fight occurring within the ruling coalition is the one which should not determine us to make pessimistic scenarios on our country’s future.

The political confrontation is a normal process for any democratic state. In my tenure of president, I will take care that the confrontation should be in the legal framework and constitutional space.

Also, it is important that the state institutions, firstly those responsible for maintaining the constitutional order, should not be involved in the political fights. Any other way of their operating will be sanctioned.

We are obliged to appear to the world as a civilized country, which is able to manage the crisis in a democratic way. We are not an isolated state. As partners we have the largest democratic countries and firstly, the European Union, in which we want to integrate.

Therefore we have a huge responsibility towards our foreign partners and our citizens to provide a safe and trustful climate in the country. During the last days, I talked to many European politicians who said that this is their first expectation on behalf of Moldova to remain a stable country with democratic reflections.

I held separate discussions with the AIE leaders, and I urged them to find a solution to further functional governance. We need it in order to be able to enforce the initiated reforms. We all must recognize the importance of the historical moment and rise to our people’s expectations.

I was assured that in the near future, the three components of the AIE will come back to negotiations in order to identify solutions to the emerged situation. I am confident that beyond the divergences, they will know to find a consensus in the interest of our country. Yet, the country’s interest is the integration into the EU.

I also said that I had accepted to be head of state guided by the idea. I don’t think that there is any alternative for it. The way of reforms carried out by Moldova is not easy. The democratic exercise is learned over time, and the attempts are unavoidable. We can overcome these attempts.
