Moldovan, European experts address air quality

On February 26, 2013, European experts met in Chisinau to discuss the support provided to Moldova on ensuring air quality. Moldova is a member of the project «Air quality governance in the Eastern Europe».

Since 2011, when Moldova became part of the above mentioned project, the Moldovan specialists have been attending air protection training courses. The European representatives said that Moldovan specialists were going to participate in a range of seminars in 2013 in order to improve their knowledge as regards the air pollution monitoring.

Due to the project, the Environment Ministry appointed a person to weekly report on actions taken in the field.

According to the experts, besides training, Moldova also needs a legislative framework on air protection, giving that no amendments have been made in the field since 1997. “We have a law on atmospheric air with an exceeded term, which does not comply with the European Union’s standards anymore. This is why, we propose to elaborate a new law on atmospheric air protection until 2014,” Deputy Environment Minister Valentina Ţapis said.

The project «Air quality governance in the Eastern Europe» will last until 2014 and will costs 7 million euros. It provides support on atmospheric air protection to Armenia, Azerbaijan, Belarus, Georgia, Moldova, Russia and Ukraine.
