Germany may veto Bulgaria’s and Romania’s accession to Schengen Area

Germany will block the accession of Bulgaria and Romania to the Schengen Area if necessary. The announcement was made by the German Minister of Interior Hans-Peter Friedrich in an interview for Spiegel magazine.

In his words, the German citizens will support the enlargement of the Schengen Area, provided Bulgaria and Romania cover all requirements for this accession. However, this has not happened so far, the German minister concluded.
