Bulgarian population lessens and advances in age
The National Statistical Institute has released data regarding the demographic development of Bulgaria in 2012.
It shows that the Bulgarian population has been decreasing and advancing in age and the villages in this country have been becoming depopulated. By December 31, 2012, there were 7 282 042 people living in Bulgaria which is 45 183 people or 0.4% less than the same day in 2011. 69 000 children were born in 2012 and 109 281 people passed away.
Nearly every 5th Bulgarian is aged 65 or older. The population in the Bulgarian villages went for the first time under 2 million people. 172 villages were uninhabited.
