Romanians are the most likely in the EU to go on holiday in home country

When it comes to holidays, most Romanians choose to stay within their own national borders. Only 7 percent of holiday trips made by Romanians in 2011 were to destinations outside the country – the lowest percentage in the EU – according to figures recently published by EU statistics office Eurostat.

Other nations with a preference for home country holidays include Spain, where only 8 percent of trips are to foreign destinations, and Portugal, Greece, France and Bulgaria (between 9 percent and 12 percent of all holidays).

At the other end of the spectrum, are Luxembourg and Belgium, where 100 percent and 74 percent of trips respectively are to foreign holiday spots. In the case of Luxembourg, the result is perhaps not surprising, given the city state’s size, however, the figure for Belgium is much higher than the next placed EU countries, which come in around the 50 percent mark.

Spain was the top foreign destination of EU residents in 2011; 13 percent of all outbound trips, followed by Italy and France, both with 9 percent. In general, EU citizens are more likely to go to neighboring countries than anywhere else. Romania is an exception to the rule, with Italy being the number one foreign destination and neighbors Bulgaria and Hungary only coming second and third respectively.
