EC: Bulgaria takes insufficient steps to improve situation of Roma people
Bulgarian Roma account for 9.94 per cent of the country’s population and are the most populous part in terms of the ratio to the rest of the population in an EU member state.
This is what data released by the EC shows on the progress report for integrating this minority.
Given the average for the European Union, the number of Roma people accounts for 1.18 per cent of the total population.
For Bulgaria, the EC reports insufficient attention is being paid to the issue of educating Roma people, providing jobs for Roma people in rural regions, health insurance, etc. The Commission recommends that the absorption rate of EU funds related to improving the living standard of this minority should be accelerated.
