Moldovan speaker, Polish official discuss parliamentary cooperation, EU integration

On March 11, 2013, Moldovan Parliament Speaker Marian Lupu held a meeting with the marshal of the Polish senate, Bogdan Borusewicz, who came on a working visit to Moldova, the parliament’s communication and media relations department has reported.

During the meeting, Borusewicz said Poland backed Moldova’s negotiations with the EU and wanted the association agreement to be at least sealed during the next Eastern Partnership Summit in Vilnius. Bogdan Borusewicz said the EU treated Moldova as a leader among other Eastern Partnership states. According to him, the EU highly praised the quality of the Moldovan-Polish inter-parliamentary dialogue. The Polish official said Poland would further back the promotion of reforms in Moldova and help it meet the EU integration goal.

In the same context, Lupu praised Poland’s support for Moldova’s EU integration goal. He voiced hope that the association agreement with the EU would be sealed during the next Eastern Partnership Summit in Vilnius and signed in 2014. The Moldovan speaker highly praised the quality and consistency of the Moldovan-Polish political dialogue. He said political bilateral ties were exemplary, whereas Moldova counted on their further consolidation. According to him, Poland is a firm supporter of the EU’s enlargement towards east, thus being an active promoter of Moldova’s modernisation and EU integration efforts. “A relevant example in this respect, are the efforts Poland took in order to promote Moldova as a “success story” within the Eastern Partnership and the support it offered Moldova during the Polish chairmanship of the European Council in the second quarter of 2011,” Lupu said.

Marian Lupu said Moldova was firmly progressing in the negotiations on an association agreement with the EU, including the creation of a deep and comprehensive free trade area as well as in the implementation of the conditions of the action plan on a visa free regime with the EU. Lupu noted that Moldova wanted to meet both goals by the next Eastern Partnership Summit, due in Vilnius in November 2013.

Touching upon the inter-parliamentary dialogue, Lupu reaffirmed Moldova’s constant interest in enlarging and diversifying bilateral ties and using the inter-parliamentary cooperation potential. The Moldovan speaker said it was necessary to boost up mutual parliamentary visits and highly praised the importance of the Moldovan-Polish parliamentary assembly’s activity. “We plead for the establishment and maintenance of cooperation ties between special commissions and national delegations within international bodies,” Lupu said.

Lupu praised the financial support Poland offers Moldova within the Development Assistance Programme, which really backs the continuation of modernisation reforms. Marian Lupu said the Moldovan diaspora actively participated in the consolidation of the Moldovan state in order to promote the Moldovan civil nation.

At the end of the meeting, Borusewicz invited Moldovan Speaker Marian Lupu to pay an official visit to Poland.
