Chisinau hosted first congress of Moldovan midwives
Deputy Speaker Liliana Palihovici today attended on May 8, 2013 the official opening of the first congress of the Moldovan Midwives Association, due on 8-9 May. The event was focused on highly qualified health care services provided by midwives.
Palihovici said that there were carried out many actions in this sector over the past years. In 2012, the law on reproduction was adopted in Moldova for the first time.
At the same time, the government finances a continuous training programme for gynaecologists and midwives, Palihovici noted.
“A decline in birth rate was recorded in Moldova over the past ten years. Although the state provides financial assistance to families with children, this money is not enough. It is necessary to implement some complex programmes in the sector, as we are facing the problem of population ageing,” she said.
Attending the event also were experts from Switzerland and Romania. The International Midwives’ Day was celebrated on 5 May.
