Within last 10 years Romania's population decreased by 2.6 million
Population of Romania now is just over19 million people and within last 10 years it has declined by 2.6 million. This is the lowest number of population in the last 35 years.
These data were made public by National Institute of Statistics of Romania (NIS).
"Decline of population in most districts of the country is caused mainly by low birth rate and migration processes linked with the departure of Romanian citizens to work in the foreign countries", - the report says.
Report emphasizes other no less important reasons, which are the lack of both investments and creation of work places as well as high levels of poverty in some regions.
Galati, Dolj, Iasi, Brasov and Constanta are the counties with the highest percentage of out-migration, where number of residents has reduced by 296 thousand people over the last 10 years.
