Georgian Defense Minister Irakly Alasania said at the parliamentary committee for defense and security that Russia and Georgia were improving trade-economic ties and reducing tensions that could cause military actions.

Imports of Georgian wine and mineral water in Russia were banned in spring 2006 over tensions between the two states. Although, the official reason was poor quality of the products.

The government that was formed after the parliamentary polls of October 1, 2012, considers restoration of ties with Russia the main goal of foreign policy. The new government initiated talks on return of Georgian products to the Russian market.
